The Grand Prix of Lower Silesia Award for "The Proposal" at the 16th Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival!

We have learned the winners of the 16th edition of Millennium Docs Against Gravity! The jury has given the Award of the Marshall of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship and its accompanying EUR 3000 prize to the film “The Proposal” by Jill Magid. Paweł Ziemilski’s “In Touch” received a Special Mention.

The Wrocław jury consisting of: Weronika Bilska, Małgorzata Kozubek, Jarosław Perduta, and Filip Zawada gave the Lower Silesian Grand Prix to a film that “dealt with difficult issues elegantly, tried to resolve a conflict through intelligent and creative dialogue, asked questions about the limits of art and copyright laws, showed archives in a fascinating way, created a strong female portrait, and intriguingly married direction to acting”.

In Jill Magid’s “The Proposal” we see the director attempting to organize an exhibition of the works of Luis Barragán, one of the most original modernist architects of the 20th century. When she is denied access to his archive, she decides to find out why the Mexican visionary’s entire legacy rests now in the hands of a single individual. The film documents her attempts to convince Zanco to relinquish absolute control over the archive and return it to the architect’s homeland. It also shows how cutting off access to Barragán’s work might paradoxically serve to rejuvenate his legacy. A special screening of “The Proposal” will take place on Sunday at 8:30 p.m., concluding the Wrocław edition of the festival.

Special Mention for “In Touch”

Paweł Ziemilski’s “In Touch” received a Special Mention. The jury appreciated it for “pushing the boundaries of documentary narrative and form, bringing the audience closer to the protagonists, and directing our attention to the current topic of mass emigration of Poles”. The director, using projections of recordings of Skype conversations, tries to capture the way in which freedom, opening up to the world, mobility, and modern technology change your perception of yourself and your close ones.
