Balkrishna Doshi (1927–2023) is one of India's most influential 20th-century architects and recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. From the 1960s onwards, he built sustainably, using energy-efficient, local materials and natural air-conditioning. Since the 1980s, he created low-cost housing estates that were further developed by slum dwellers of large Indian cities, enabling them to advance socially. His focus was always on the individual who – as a student, employee, visitor or resident – made use of his buildings in a utilitarian manner. His sharpness of mind, humour and wisdom create a picture of a man from whom we can not only learn how to build “humanely” but above all, how to be a true humanist. Doshi invented what young architects are discussing today, and we will join this discussion together with the guests of our meeting.
