Women On the Pitch!

after the screening of the film COPA 71, dir. James Erskine, Rachel Ramsay

screening with audio description and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing; meeting with Polish Sign Language interpretation

"Is it a women's match? What year is it? It's unbelievable, why haven't I heard about this before?" – this is how Brandi Chastain reacts in the opening scene of the film "Copa 71" when informed that she has just watched the final of the 1971 Women's World Cup. The American footballer, one of the most successful players in the history of football, two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion, cannot believe that more than half a century ago, more than a hundred thousand fans watched the final of the Women's World Cup at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico. At the time, women were banned from playing football in most countries around the world, so much was done to ensure that no one heard about the event. The first official women's World Cup under FIFA was not played until 1991. Now women's football is gaining strength, but it is still overshadowed by men's football and has to constantly fight for exposure, equal treatment and money, which is incomparably less. The screening of the film "Copa 71" will serve as a starting point for a discussion about the role of women's sport and the fight for viewers' attention, money, and equal treatment.
