Aleksandra Hewelt, The Saddest Song in the World

Audio-visual project displayed on 27 analog televisions. I compose this electronic theatre as a hybrid, piecing together scraps of found video from YouTube, films, and images. Guided by the logic of experience, I operate in the realm of experimentation and inspiration exploration, constructing in a palimpsestic manner, utilising the possibilities of the medium at my disposal. In my composition, I aim to connect worlds that will never otherwise converge. In this labyrinth of worlds and meanings, I extend a helping hand through the music and satire of Tom Lehrer, who, like a mediator, intercedes with musical anecdotes. The title references Guy Maddin's film "The Saddest Music in the World" which admonishes that emotions are compromised, and the world is inclined to transform our deepest pain into easily consumable spectacle.

This project was realized with the financial support of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
