Panel discussion: Contemporary museums – expectations vs. reality
after the screening of MORE THAN A MUSEUM, dir. Morrosko Vila-San-Juan
Opened in 2021, the Munch Museum in Oslo was built under considerable pressure. The design by the small Spanish firm Estudio Herreros was intended to have a significant impact on the panorama of the whole city. The low-emission, multifunctional building reveals to visitors not only exhibition rooms, but also spaces usually hidden in museum’s backrooms. The film will show us how it all came together, and during the panel we will discuss the functions of such buildings and the extent to which they can be implemented. We will also touch upon heated Polish discussions about the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the expansion of the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław.
Panelists:
Michał Duda – historian, researcher, and communicator of contemporary architecture. Since 2006, he has been associated with the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław, and became its director in 2022. Curator and co-curator of numerous exhibitions on pre-war and contemporary architecture, shown in Poland and abroad. Author of the book Patchwork. Architektura Jadwigi Grabowskiej-Hawrylak, the first monograph about the architect.
Olga Michalik – museologist, art historian. Member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). She focuses on social and environmental responsibility of museums. As an independent expert and mentor, she has collaborated with dozens of art, residential, historical, and university museums, as well as art galleries. Author of the publication Inkluzywne muzea (Inclusive Museums).
