Discussion: The Power of Activism and Solidarity after the screening of EVERYBODY TO KENMURE STREET, dir. Felipe Bustos Sierra.

On 13 May 2021 in Pollokshields, Glasgow, residents blocked a Home Office vehicle to protect two Sikhs from deportation. Soon, more residents joined, drawn by social media. The film documents the spontaneous protest, community solidarity, and the power of peaceful action. It highlights the power of community solidarity and the effectiveness of peaceful, collective action.

Guests: 

Rocío Flores – a Mexican migrant, woman and mother living in Poland. Co-founder and director of the Commission of Latin American Workers in Poland – an organisation established in response to experiences of labour exploitation and the need to create better living and working conditions for migrants. She participates in Participatory Action Research (PAR) within a project by the Nomada Association, carried out in collaboration with PICUM (Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants), sharing her perspective as a migrant. She actively supports the migrant community in self-organising and providing mutual assistance, particularly in situations of extremely hard labour, discrimination and deprivation of basic rights. Her work gives a voice to migrants and contributes to building a more just and inclusive Europe.

Kaja Kędzioł – a cultural researcher, PhD student at the Institute of Cultural Studies at the University of Wrocław, and a social activist. Her academic work focuses on cultural narratives of love, social discourses, and contemporary changes within communities. She is a co-founder of Solidarnościówka Wrocław. As part of the Nomada Association, she is responsible for communications and advocacy.   

Moderator: 

Michał Sołtysek – a cultural studies and film studies scholar, a graduate of the University of Wrocław and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He has worked at film festivals such as the New Horizons International Film Festival, the American Film Festival and the Polish Feature Film Festival. Ambassador for the KIPA and Netflix workshop ‘Nakręć się na przyszłość’, which he completed in 2023, and ambassador for the LUX Audience Award in 2024 and 2025. Since 2024, he has been associated with Estrada Poznańska and Kino Muza in Poznań. His main area of work involves programming and producing film series, film reviews and special events at Kino Muza. Currently, he is also a co-organiser of the British Film Festival.
