KAMERA Film Discussion Club meeting: The Oscars® in women’s hands
after the screening of MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE, dir. Shoshannah Stern
It has become something of a tradition to screen a film from the Millennium Docs Against Gravity festival programme as part of the KAMERA Film Discussion Club’s May series. This year, we will be focusing on the presence of exceptional women at the Oscars® ceremonies. Although we are well acquainted with the two female categories of this award (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress), Hollywood unfortunately has a long way to go in celebrating women’s achievements in cinema. What is more, representatives of various minority groups make up a mere fraction of the winners. That is why we invite you to a screening of ‘Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore’, about an incredibly inspiring protagonist who was the first Deaf actress to win an Oscar®. This documentary presents the intimate story of Marlee, who constantly faces judgement – both as a budding actress and as an Oscar® winner. It invites us to understand the reality and culture of Deaf people, for whom seeing themselves represented on screen was a breakthrough in cinema. In subsequent sessions of the series, we will also look at other female figures who have won an Oscar®, making history in the process. It is worth asking ourselves: isn’t it high time that women holding a golden statuette became the norm during awards season, rather than a breakthrough?
