The Uses of Anger. American Insurgent Cinema
A section presenting documentary films devoted to American culture and the cinema of resistance. Its organization coincides with the 50th anniversary of the American Studies Center, University of Warsaw, which is a partner of the initiative. The films included in the program will trace the history of the formation of civil society rooted in struggles for human rights. They will highlight achievements of a critical current in cinema – both documentary and experimental – shaped in opposition to the dominant narratives of Hollywood. Screenings will be accompanied by discussions with academics and experts in American studies, sociology, cultural studies, and film studies. The section aims to showcase the power of self-organization, particularly among queer communities, Black communities, and women, in their fight for a better and more just world, as well as the importance of adopting an active stance in social life. The section is curated by dr Krystyna Mazur and dr Gabriela Sitek.
Partners of the retrospective include the American Studies Center at the University of Warsaw; the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; KINOMUZEUM; Jasna 10: The Social Institution of Culture of Krytyka Polityczna; Lambda Warszawa; QueerMuzeum, Black Justice Poland Foundation.
