Film Discussion Club of the University of Łódź’s East Asia and Pacific Student Research Societ
The event will be accompanied by the screening of ‘North South Man Woman’, dir. Morten Traavik & Sun Kim (97 min.)
Discussion duration: 45 min.
‘North South Man Woman’, directed by Morten Traavik & Sun Kim, tells the story of a charismatic businesswoman and North Korean defector, Yujin Han, who runs a matchmaking agency in Seoul called Lovestorya, which connects North Korean refugee women with South Korean men. Over the course of five years, the film follows Yujin’s daily life, her interactions with clients, and the tensions that arise from cultural differences, stereotypes, and societal expectations on the politically divided Korean Peninsula. The film combines observation, interviews, and archival footage, offering a reflection on the reality of modern South Korea.
Following the screening, we invite you to a discussion led by members of the University of Łódź’s East Asia and Pacific Student Research Society. The meeting will provide an opportunity to analyse the social and cultural context of relations between North and South Korea as depicted in the film, and to discuss identity, propaganda, and everyday life in a divided country. The discussion will take the form of an open meeting, during which the audience will have the opportunity to share their own reflections and ask questions.
The discussion will be hosted by the University of Łódź's East Asia and Pacific Student Research Society, a student organisation that has operated since 2001 within the Faculty of International and Political Studies. The University of Łódź East Asia and Pacific Student Research Society promotes knowledge of the cultures, politics, and societies of East Asia. Members of the Society organise lectures, conferences and events open to the general public.
The event duration is 45 minutes. You can attend the event with a ticket purchased for the screening.
Limit of places: 167
The discussion will be held in Polish.
