Shifting Baselines

Shifting Baselines
dir. Julien Elie/Canada/2025/101 min

Where the Rio Grande meets the sea, dunes attract rare seabirds and the last wild ocelots in the United States. Yet the swamps have been drained, beaches closed, and homes bought out to make way for the new SpaceX launch facility. The film explores the consequences of this space fever,” raising a fundamental question: do visions of space exploration truly lead to a better future, or are they merely expressions of reckless ambition that could bring humanity to disaster? We witness how local communities in Boca Chica experience conflicting emotions: on one hand, they marvel at spectacular rocket launches and dream of space exploration; on the other, they see the destruction of the natural environment and the disappearance of wildlife. In this small Texas town, all of humanitys hopes, dreams, fears, and doubts come to the surface – from technological enthusiasm to concern for the fragility of nature and the need for balance between technology and the environment. The film highlights the dramatic contrast between technological progress and ecosystem vulnerability, prompting reflection on the true cost of development.
