Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie

Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie
dir. Alex Gibney/USA/2026/107 min

In August 2022, Salman Rushdie was violently attacked on stage, sustaining fifteen stab wounds. The film is a poignant study of his physical and spiritual recovery, and a story about the strength of a writer for whom writing remains an act of resistance. Rushdie guides viewers through the story of his career, the practice of his craft, and the cultural weight of his work. He grapples with questions of violence, forgiveness, and freedom of expression – questions that resonate today with particular urgency. A key element of the film is the voice-over narration based on his 2024 memoir, “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,” used in a deeply moving and often poetic way. The story reaches its climax when, a year later, the author returns to the scene of the attack and says, “I stand where I fell” – a gesture that becomes a symbol of courage, memory, and unwavering resolve.
