Discussion: The History of American Imperialism

after the screening of FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS – NOTES AND IMAGES FROM THE VIET NAM WAR, dir. Jill Godmilow

Partners:  American Studies Center, University of Warsaw, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Jasna 10: Krytyka Polityczna’s Community Cultural Institution, Lambda Warszawa, QueerMuseum

In his 2022 film, Godmilow revisits the facts regarding the scale of US military operations in Vietnam, the crimes committed against the civilian population and the ecosystem. He highlights the role played by war correspondents reporting on these events in making people realise that military action does not lead to peace, but to a cycle of violence. Godmilow emphasises that it was the heroic work of war correspondents that enabled the public resistance and protests, which contributed to the end of the military operations. In the discussion, Dr Jan Smoleński will talk about the history of US imperial military operations.
