Discussion: Forgotten_remembered_implied. A Sapphic Experience
after the screening of LA BELLE ANNÉE, dir. Angelica Ruffier
Partner: Sistrum, LES*ŚRODY, QueerMuzeum
Reclaiming lesbian memory often begins with gaps, omissions and understatements. The stories of women who love women rarely found their way into official archives – they have survived in the little details hidden within diaries, letters and uncaptioned photographs. Recovering them resembles archaeological work, with sites in attics, cellars and drawers. A lesbian archive is most often domestic and affective, and the contemporary lesbian document does not so much reconstruct history as reveal the process of its search. Preserving such stories means accepting their fragmentary, ephemeral and ambiguous nature, and sometimes creatively filling in the gaps. Instead of a single coherent narrative, we are left with fragments of les*stories. Today, more and more Polish non-heteronormative herstories are coming to light, reshaping mainstream culture. We will share a few of them.
The event is part of the LES*WEDNESDAYS series at QueerMuzeum.
The female creative duo TANDEM (Damski TANDEM Twórczy) – Agnieszka Małgowska & Monika Rak – are art-activists whose work has focused on the Polish lesbian culture* for the past 15 years. As artists and activists, they recognise the value of subjective perspectives and the most subtle traces of sapphic culture, and they value community and inclusivity. They archive (Lesbian* Virtual Archive), research (the Lesbijska Inspira interview series), organise events (LES*WEDNESDAYS at QueerMuseum), perform (Deep Tissues. The Herstories of Jadwiga Maria Strumff, Drag King Show), and film (the L*POETKI documentary). They are active in various collectives, including: Kobiecy* Zakład Pracy and the Sistrum Association. Lesbian* Cultural Space*.
