Discussion: Together Against Injustice – On Civil Disobedience

after the screening of EVERYBODY TO KENMURE STREET, dir. Felipe Bustos Sierra

Partner: Amnesty International

Demonstrations, Italian strikes, Japanese-style strikes, road blockades, stunts – there are many ways to stand up for our rights. In an era of growing authoritarian tendencies worldwide, civil disobedience is becoming an increasingly important means of resisting injustice. Following the screening of ‘Everybody to Kenmure Street’, we will discuss agency and the power that stems from unity and commitment. We will reflect on civil disobedience in democratic Western societies and in authoritarian Belarus. We will also discuss where Poland stands on this spectrum – and how our actions can influence reality.

Guests:

Anna Błaszczak-Banasiak – director of Amnesty International Poland, with over 15 years of professional experience in the human rights field. Lawyer, barrister, specialist in non-discrimination law. Her professional experience includes work for the European Parliament and over 14 years at the Commissioner for Human Rights Office in Poland, a.o., as a director of the Equal Treatment Team.

Hanna Morskaya is a volunteer with the Human Rights Centre ‘Viosna’, a human rights organisation in Belarus that has been banned by the regime. She has been arrested several times in Belarus for her peaceful activism in support of the rule of law and against police violence. Following her most recent spell in prison, she emigrated to Poland. She is currently an Amnesty International activist.

The discussion will be moderated by Aleksandra Rutkowska, a reporter and head of the foreign desk at TVP Info, host of the global affairs programme ‘Oko na świat’. For over a decade, she has been documenting human stories, with a focus on humanitarian issues.
