Zbigniew Bzdak was born in Radomsko and studied in Kraków. In 1979, he left Poland as a photographer to join the Canoandes ’79 kayaking expedition, which set out to explore the wild rivers of Mexico and Peru. His photographs from expeditions to the Colca Canyon in Peru – the deepest canyon in the world – and from the first-ever kayak descent of the Amazon from its source to its mouth were published in National Geographic magazine. After settling in the USA, he moved to Chicago, where he worked for almost 20 years as a photojournalist for the Chicago Tribune. His photographs have won numerous awards in press photography competitions, and in 2015 he received an Emmy Award for the documentary film ‘Kenwood’s Journey’. He is a member of The Explorers Club and the Association of Polish Art Photographers (ZPAF). Zbigniew Bzdak currently lives in the Great Lakes region on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he works on exhibitions of his photographs in art galleries in Poland and the United States.
