Joybubbles

Joybubbles
dir. Rachael J. Morrison/USA/2026/80 min

A portrait of Joe Engressia’s life – the brilliant boy blind from birth who discovered he could control the global telephone system by whistling a magical tone. Longing for connection, he turned his passion for the telephone into a way to engage with the world. As one of the first “phone phreaks” – protohackers who used technology to bypass the global telecom monopoly – he unknowingly paved the way for a subculture shaping the future of hacking and technology. Defying a paternalistic society, he achieved his dream of living independently without giving up fun. From running the Zzzzyzzerrific Funline and adopting the name Joybubbles, to rejecting adult responsibilities and declaring himself a perpetual five-year-old, Engressia reclaimed a childhood marked by trauma to spread joy to anyone willing to listen. The film uses rich archival materials, surreal imagery, and interviews with Joybubbles’ friends to create an extraordinary story of independence, imagination, and the power of human creativity.
