A Century in Sound

A Century in Sound
dir. Nicholas Dwyer & Tu Neill/Japan/2024/106 min

In bustling Tokyo, there are unique “ongaku kissa” – music cafés where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the sounds of music. The film tells the story of three such cafés, their owners, and the cats that inhabit them, showing how the culture of “Deep Listening” provides an escape from the chaos of the city. These cafés specialize in different genres, from classical music to jazz and Japanese rock. In one café, food service was removed to maintain silence, while others spent years perfecting sound systems and turntables for the most faithful audio experience. “Ongaku Kissa” are cultural hubs, embodying a reverent love for the music they celebrate. The film portrays the owners, their stories, and the cats that accompany daily life in the cafés. Each space offers a meditative retreat from the bustle of Tokyo – and the wider world – becoming a stylish capsule of memories amidst the noise and rush of the city.
