Workshops: To See the Language
after the screening MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE, dir. Shoshannah Stern
The story of Marlee Matlin – the first Deaf Oscar® winner – is a tale of breaking down barriers, visibility and the value of representation. Her experience serves as a starting point for reflecting on language, identity and modes of communication that go beyond the dominant order of the hearing world. During the workshop, we will take a closer look at this context and learn the basics of Polish Sign Language and Deaf Culture. We will discuss stereotypes and challenges faced by this community, as well as etiquette rules for interacting with Deaf people. Together, we will learn basic phrases in Polish Sign Language and explore the key differences between its grammar and that of Polish.
Host:
Aleksandra Szalek-Palmowska – MA in Polish Philosophy, sign language interpreter and lecturer, and support worker for deaf people. She has been involved with the Deaf community for 18 years. She has experience running projects for deaf people and interpreting at events and lectures for deaf students. She promotes and shares knowledge about sign language, the lives of Deaf people and Deaf culture. She is currently associated with the Katarynka Foundation and the Support and Testing Centre in Wrocław.
Participation in the workshop is free of charge (limited places available).
