Sun Ra: Do The Impossible

dir. Christine Turner / 2025 / USA / 85 min
Sun Ra, a jazz pioneer, combined swing, bebop, and free jazz to create an avant-garde sound with his collective, Arkestra.

From swing to bebop to free jazz, Sun Ra fused countless musical styles to craft his unique, avant-garde sound. Together with his ever-evolving collective, Arkestra, he pushed the limits of jazz and independently produced over 200 albums. In his youth, he had a revelation – he claimed to have been transported to Saturn and called to devote himself entirely to music. He created Afrofuturism, transforming ancient Egyptian and interstellar metaphors into a musical and spiritual vision that resonates across generations. As Sun Ra himself said: “What’s possible has already been tried and failed. Now it’s time to try the impossible."
