Lecture: Czechoslovak modernity

after the screening of CZECHOSLOVAK ARCHITECTURE 58–89, dir. Jan Zajíček

After the screening of the film based on an original idea by Vladimir 518 (Czech rapper, graffiti artist, and comic book creator), which tells the stories of beautiful brutalist and brutally neglected buildings, we will delve even deeper into the world of Czechoslovak architecture from 1958 to 1989. We will learn more about figures such as Karel Prager, the legendary Machonin couple, as well as members of the SIAL group and their designs. Who altered the skyline of Prague by designing the Czech capital’s first skyscraper? Which of the brilliant architects used to say that ideas came to him when he was digging up carrots, and who is credited with the statement that architecture cannot be “pompous and stupid”? We will look for answers to these and other questions during an imaginary trip across the (Czech and Slovak) map.
