The Anti-Masterclass by Mark Cousins

Come and meet Mark Cousins at an event which will subvert the idea of a typical masterclass. Although the meeting will be unorthodox in form, we will tackle some of the most prominent notions which are often represented in Cousins’ work. We will analyse images, showing how different stills can have a plethora of planes and evoke different emotions. In another important part of the meeting we will talk about storytelling. Both from the side of choosing subjects, but also constructing the storylines. Can the way in which we construct fictitious narratives help us with creating documentary ones?

Mark Cousins is one of the most prolific contemporary documentary filmmakers of our time. Among his films are: The Story of Film: An Odyssey, Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema, I Am Belfast, The Story of Looking, The Eyes of Orson Welles, The Story of Film: A New Generation and A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things. His work has been screened at the most important festivals in the world: Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival.

The masterclass will be hosted by the Artistic Director of MDAG, Karol Piekarczyk.
