Anti-Romani sentiments? To the dustbin of history!

After the screening of CHARLIE CHAPLIN: THE VAGABOND, dir. Carmen Chaplin

Carmen Chaplin’s documentary debut is a film biography of her grandfather, Charlie Chaplin, and an attempt to explore his Romani heritage. The director reveals that her legendary ancestor may have had a Romani great-grandfather and was not born in London, but in the Romani community of Black Patch in Birmingham. The film will serve as a starting point for a discussion about contemporary Romani people living in Poland, their identity, emancipation, and self-determination. People of Roma origin still face various forms of discrimination that have accumulated over centuries, yet their voices are becoming stronger and more audible. We will talk about a number of important activities that Roma women and men are undertaking in areas such as social activism, culture, arts, film, and science.
