Is whistling worth it? A meeting with Jakub Typiak, an ornithologist and populariser of bird knowledge
after the screening of WHISTLE, dir. Christopher Nelius
At the international Masters of Musical Whistling in Hollywood – the largest and most prestigious whistling competition in the world – participants from across the globe compete for the title of best whistler. Overseeing the entire event is Carole Anne Kaufman, a suburban hairdresser turned producer striving to elevate whistling to the level of true musical artistry. The film shows that every note matters, and the whistlers’ performances – whether solo, with accompaniment, or with a full orchestra – can move audiences as deeply as traditional concerts. Behind this seemingly simple gesture lies deep passion, technical mastery, and a remarkable artistic community.
Jakub Typiak – an ornithologist and populariser of knowledge about birds and their protection. He has been interested in birds since the age of five. He is the author of numerous lectures on bird conservation and a guide for many ‘bird walks’. On a day-to-day basis, he organises ornithological research conducted in the Baltic Sea. Since 2014, he has been trying to inspire others with his passion by running a YouTube channel called Ptasia Strefa. He collaborates with organisations such as: the KULING Waterfowl Research Group, the Baltic Action Foundation, the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, and the Ornithological Station of the Institute of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences. He is the co-author of the book ‘Gdynia ptasie miasto’.
