AWARD CEREMONY: The Mayor of Gdynia’s Award, the Etnomatograf Award, the All About Freedom Festival Award and the Kompas Award presented by the Museum of Emigration in Gdynia.
The ceremony will be accompanied by the screening of GHOST ELEPHANTS, dir. Werner Herzog
Mad scientists and explorers are Werner Herzog's favourite film protagonists. In his latest work, the director once again turns his attention to such characters, this time focusing on the search for giant ghost elephants, a distant relative of which is on display at the Natural History Museum in Washington. The narrative follows Dr. Steve Boyes, who tracks down a herd hiding from humans in Angola, in uninhabited terrain the size of England known to locals as the end of the world. As the story unfolds, Herzog documents his protagonist’s obsessions, dreams, and flights of fancy. He then poses the question: would it not be better for these elephants to remain beyond human reach and function as the titular ghosts? The dilemma is further complicated by a tribal leader, who has given his consent to the search, and wonders whether the fate of the elephants is directly linked to that of the people.
