Museum Night: free screening of EXPOSING MUYBRIDGE

Eadweard Muybridge was the most famous photographer of the 19th century. His series of photographs of galloping horses, commissioned by the railway magnate Leland Stanford, finally proved that at a certain point, the animals have all four legs in the air. Muybridge used a set of 12 cameras fitted with newly introduced shutters and more, definitively settling the debate over horses whilst also influencing the development of cinematography. Gary Oldman, a collector of Muybridge’s photographs, compares his achievements in photography to the discovery of penicillin or the splitting of the atom. Towards the end of his career, his photographic studies of the movement of naked human bodies, animals, and wrestlers became an inspiration for artists such as David Hockney and Francis Bacon. To this day, Muybridge’s work continues to inspire scientists and artists alike.
