Meeting: Mushrooms Bring People Together. Between Mycology and Anthropology

after the screening of DAUGHTERS OF THE FOREST, dir. Otilia Portillo Padua

Partner: The Ethnography Department of the National Museum in Gdańsk – Partner of the ETNOMATOGRAF Award for the best film on ethnographic and anthropological themes

How about we take a trip to the forests of Mexico, where the worlds of humans and fungi intertwine? Where science flows seamlessly into belief and metaphysics. From the visible to the invisible. Inspired by the film ‘Daughters of the Forest’ and its protagonists, indigenous mycologists who combine traditional knowledge with modern science, we will examine the challenges of the present day – discrimination, environmental degradation, and climate and social change. We will discuss the role of fungi in science, everyday life, ecology and beliefs with Katarzyna Banaś, an educator, and advocate of wild cuisine.

Guest:

Katarzyna Banaś – the daughter of mushroom pickers and an educator who, for the past five years, has been taking people out into the urban wilds to show them the good things that grow there. Her journey into wild cuisine has involved in-depth practical experience across many levels of the food system. Today, she argues that foraging is not just a passion, but a tool for solving contemporary economic, environmental, and health problems.

Moderator:

Krystyna Weiher-Sitkiewicz – film educator, discussion moderator, anthropologist and exhibition curator. Curator at the Ethnography Department of the National Museum in Gdańsk.
