Meeting: Women on the Wall
after the screening of GIRL CLIMBER, dir. Jon Glassberg
Emily Harrington became the first woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite in under 24 hours. This iconic objective, previously reached only by men, usually takes even a highly skilled alpinist 2–3 days, and only about 60% of attempts end in success. Our guest, Małgorzata Jurewicz, has completed the 650-metre Virginia route (A3, 5.7, 17 pitches) on El Capitan in just nine days. It is the most difficult big-wall route in history to have been climbed solo by a Polish woman. What is it like up there, and what challenges does one face? How does it feel to sleep half a kilometre above the ground? Is climbing for everyone? After the screening, we will talk about the phenomenon and beauty of climbing, about perseverance, determination and pushing boundaries.
Guest:
Małgorzata Jurewicz – lawyer, mountaineer, member of the Trójmiasto Mountaineering Club and the Polish Mountaineering Association’s national team for high-altitude climbing. She has completed a number of notable mountain ascents, both in summer and winter. Most of these were completed with her regular partner, Józek Soszyński. One of their most recent joint achievements was the opening of a new route, Resurrection (M7+, A2, 300 m), on the north-east face of Pointe de l’Androsace in the Mont Blanc massif in April this year. Last July, this time as part of a team with Ilona Gawęda, she climbed the Direttissima Gabbarou-Long route on the Red Pillar of Brouillard, also in the Mont Blanc massif.
