Meeting: What kind of world do we live in?

after the screening of ORWELL: 2 + 2 = 5, dir. Raoul Peck

Partner: European Solidarity Centre – sponsor of the All About Freedom Festival award for the best film contributing to a broader understanding of the value of solidarity.

Are we living in an Orwellian world? Are the visions of the author of *1984* still fiction, or have they become our reality? Is this all one big conspiracy? What kind of world will we wake up to tomorrow morning? Propaganda, doublethink, algorithms, Newspeak, memory holes, unpersons, thoughtcrime, and Big Brother – these are the terms that resonate widely today, forcing us to analyse the mechanisms of power, propaganda, and systemic violence. In today’s world, rife with hypocrisy, wars, and manipulation, the simple mathematical equation 2 + 2 no longer equals four, but five. This message may prove to be our final warning. But is there any hope for us? There must be!

Guest:

Jacek Kołtan – a philosopher, he works at the European Solidarity Centre and the University of Gdańsk, and specialises in the history of the idea of solidarity, the state of contemporary democracy, and social and political theory.

Moderator:

Hanna Łozowska –  literary scholar, journalist, literary events curator, PhD in the humanities.
