SCREENINGS WITH POLISH AUDIO DESCRIPTION:
This year, thanks to the support of Visa, all films in the Main Competition will include polish audio description in the Kino Dostępne 2.0 app. Thank you!
CLOSURE
Daniel didn’t hear his son Krzysiek leaving home and heading to a bridge over the Vistula – the last place he was seen. A camera captured him, and then he disappeared: either he jumped into the river or walked off the bridge. Since then, Daniel and his wife have lived suspended between hope and fear. Unable to wait for progress in the investigation, Daniel builds a boat equipped with cameras and drones to search the river himself. Long solitary hours on the water become a chance to confront his past life.
BUGBOY
Yorgos, a shy visually impaired teenager, struggles to connect with others after his parents’ divorce. His bond with a cricket named Isabella becomes a catalyst for transformation and self-discovery. His passion for insects turns into a lesson about trust, friendship, and growing up. The film blends realism with a poetic, fairy-tale-like tone.
TO HOLD A MOUNTAIN
In the Sinjajevina mountains of Montenegro, Gara and her thirteen-year-old daughter Nada return each year to their family pastures, living close to nature and tradition. Their world is threatened when the government announces plans to build a military training ground. Gara leads local resistance, while Nada confronts loss and questions of violence against the land.
JOYBUBBLES
The story of Joe Engressia, blind from birth, who discovered he could control the global telephone system by whistling a specific tone. As one of the first “phone phreaks,” he unknowingly helped shape a subculture that influenced the future of hacking and technology.
NUISANCE BEAR
In Churchill, Manitoba—known as the polar bear capital—the predator moves among tourists, guards, and hunters and is seen as a nuisance. Through the perspective of an Inuit narrator, we witness the tense coexistence between humans and bears. Challenging nature film conventions, the film favors confrontation over moralizing.
A FOX UNDER A PINK MOON
16-year-old artist Soraya Akhalaghi documented five years of her life on her phone, capturing key moments and her attempt to escape Iran. Her artwork and personal archive create a poetic narrative about migration, identity, and art as survival.
MARIINKA
Set in eastern Ukraine, the film follows young people whose lives have been shaped by over a decade of war. Like a Greek tragedy, two brothers fight on opposite sides, while the youngest lives far away in the U.S. A story about loyalty, belonging, and division.
MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE
In 1987, Marlee Matlin became the first Deaf actress to win an Oscar® at age 21. Telling her story in sign language, she reflects on visibility, stereotypes, and the loneliness of being a pioneer.
CHILD OF MY OWN
Driven by the desire for motherhood, Alejandra begins to fake a pregnancy. What starts as a small lie turns into a complex deception. A portrait of loneliness, social pressure, and longing.
TIME AND WATER
A poetic reflection on memory, loss, and climate change, blending personal and universal narratives.
WHISPERS IN THE WOODS
A journey into ancient forests, observing wildlife and exploring family bonds. The film captures not only images but also the sounds of the forest as a living organism.
WAX & GOLD
A layered story about Ethiopia’s past and present, inspired by Ryszard Kapuściński. The film explores history, narrative, and multiple perspectives.
TWO MOUNTAINS WEIGHING DOWN MY CHEST
A story about identity between cultures, following a Chinese artist living between Berlin and Beijing. Told with humor and self-irony.
YO (LOVE IS A REBELLIOUS BIRD)
After losing her friend, Anna spends ten years building a scaled model of her house. Through art, she preserves memory and connection. A story about grief, love, and the passage of time.
How to use the Kino Dostępne 2.0 app?
Before the screening:
At a convenient time, in a place with stable internet access (Wi-Fi or a good mobile data connection), download the audiodescription or voice-over file for your selected film. To do this, find the film in the app, tap on its title, and once the film card opens, click “Download audiodescription” or “Download voice-over.” The download will finish with the message: “All files have been downloaded.”
To use the app, headphones are required. They should allow you to still hear ambient sounds, as the film’s audio (e.g. music, dialogue) will be coming from the cinema speakers.
At the cinema:
The app synchronizes audiodescription playback by analyzing sound from the cinema speakers, so you need to allow microphone access.
Note: Even with headphones connected, the app uses only your smartphone’s microphone during synchronization. Hold your device still in your hand and try to minimize background noise interference.
If you are attending a festival screening, find your film in the “Festivals or Special Screenings” section.
Films with downloaded audiodescriptions will appear at the top of the list in the “Downloaded” section. After the ads end and the film begins, tap “Start audiodescription.” Synchronization will begin.
Once successful, you will hear a confirmation sound in your headphones, followed by the narrator reading the audiodescription or subtitles. You can then safely lock your phone and put it away.
Synchronization may take between 20 and 90 seconds. If you hear “Synchronization failed,” repeat the process.
Testing the app at home
On kinodostepne.pl, you’ll find a short test film to try out the app at home. Play the test video on a computer or another device. Make sure there is minimal background noise (e.g. conversations or street sounds).
In the app, find the film “Chomik” in the film list, download its audiodescription, and start it.
