Discussion: How can we protect rivers – the circulatory system of our planet?

After the screening I AM THE RIVER, THE RIVER IS ME, dir. Petr Lom

Partner: WWF, POLITYKA

A river is not just water flowing in a riverbed; it is something much more precious.

A river is the entire ecosystem that accompanies the water; it is the circulatory system of our planet, which our quality of life depends on. It is also our heritage, in urgent need of support.

Climate change, dam-building, pollution, and the growing demand for water to irrigate crops and power hydroelectric plants have meant that the condition of the world's surface water is currently very poor. The protection of these resources should become a priority for national and international authorities. According to the European biodiversity strategy, member states should restore 25,000 km of rivers by 2030 – is this realistic? In Poland, 98.9 per cent of rivers are already in bad condition – what can we do about it? How can we help rivers? Should a river be given legal personality to be better protected? Is systemic protection better? Our experts will answer these questions during the debate.
