The Mystery Package
For over two decades, at Christmas, a mysterious package filled with gifts for the whole family has arrived at the home of Inger and Arne Sandnes in Valldal, Norway, always signed with the same message: “Merry Christmas from all of us in Arendal.” Despite numerous attempts, investigations, and media attention, the sender remains unknown. This Christmas, grandchildren – nine-year-old Edle and six-year-old Brage – decide to solve the mystery once and for all. Together with their father Magnus, who received the first package, and their mother Silje, a documentary filmmaker and director of the film, they set out on a detective adventure to uncover who is behind this extraordinary gift.
What begins as a fun family adventure quickly unfolds into a deeper, moving story. The first package arrived the year Magnus’ older brother, Hans Petter, tragically passed away. The children’s investigation uncovers family bonds, memories of loss, and emotions that shape their lives. The film combines elements of cinéma vérité with a story of childlike curiosity and Christmas magic, creating a narrative full of humor, emotion, and unexpected discoveries – a tale of tradition, memory, and the greatest mystery of all: life and its unforeseen twists.
