Jane's Journey

dir. Lorenz Knauer/Germany/2010/107 min

Dr. Jane Goodall was a world-renowned social activist, an icon of ecology, a respected scientific authority, an advocate for world peace, and a champion of animal rights and respect for nature. She was also a British researcher specializing in primatology, ethology, and anthropology. Her passion and fascination with chimpanzees led to the first serious scientific studies of primates of this kind, which she later developed into a large-scale effort to protect pristine nature and fundamental human values. More than thirty years ago, Goodall gave up her professional career and private life to devote all her energy and attention to efforts to save our endangered planet. Since then, she traveled the world for around 300 days a year with a mission to spread hope for a better future. In the film, we accompany Goodall on this extraordinary and ongoing journey across several continents. We also discover fascinating archival material that reveals the exciting past of the British researcher: her happy family home in Bournemouth, where she spent her childhood; her first trip to Africa; her marriage; and her second home – Gombe National Park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, where she began her groundbreaking research half a century ago and to which she returns every year to recharge. The film also documents the remarkable and admirable relationships that Goodall was able to build with wild and domesticated animals, as well as with other people – from Hollywood stars to undernourished African children living in refugee camps.

The film is being presented as part of the project "Cinema as a Laboratory V," co-financed by the Polish-German Cooperation Foundation.
